Erfaan and I met at Calvin's Coffee House on June 19 from 9:30-11AM. We talked a lot about our background and where we came from. Erfaan told me a lot about the history of Iran and the reasons his parents came to the US. He also was able to tell me about growing up in Jacksonville with both his Iranian and religious background. We also talked about what work we do outside the class. I told him about how I work in a laboratory on campus in the Biology department and he talked about his work with databasing scripts. We also discussed languages we were interested in learning. I talked about my interest in learning Chinese and Russian and he talked about his interest in learning Chinese, Persian, Spanish, and Arabic. We also discussed our background in learning languages and how difficult it is to gain motivation to do so.
Both of you (Alex and Erfaan) are in a similar situation that I am in with Hayden in that we're two classmates using each other for conversational partners. I think it's an interesting chat that's distinguished between a CIES student and another citizen. Everyone has deep interesting lives, but we live on the 'tefl fringe' that blends different cultures with an American-centric experience. I think that let's us talk about the experience in a very meta way. I had a similar experience with my partner.
