Summary of Mr. Rios’ Observation Class
1. Reading paragraph
2. Highlighting trouble words (Antonym, synonyms, simpler
words and explanation, connotations). He’s stressing utility and context over
ripping a word apart. Context clues are key to understanding a word, not
necessarily a dictionary definition. This is because words change depending on
what’s around it. Words are like water.
3. Main idea
4. Supporting details
5. Paraphrase or summary for own understanding
Independence: He repeats this process again till paragraph
4 by asking questions to the class. He’s doing the asking and students have
control to do it themselves. It was a 4-step process for 4 paragraphs. 50
minutes. So 50/4 is about 12 minutes a paragraph. The goal of these sessions
seems to be just to equip students rather than drudge them through it. He
starts with modeling and by paragraph 4 the students have independent control.
Is it intensive or extensive? I think this is
extensive. Only a few words were chosen, and they seem to know 90-95% of the
text’s words. Especially given that context is whats emphasized in words they
don’t understand; this means that general comprehension is focused on rather
than intensive reading.
