I met with In-young at Strozier on June 17th from 12:30-1:30. We first went over what she is looking to get out of our tutoring sessions and determined that she would like to focus on her conversational skills with regards to her sentence structure and wording as well as her writing skills. With that in mind, I began the session by having her write a ten-minute writing sample about her time at FSU so that I could determine her current level of grammar and vocabulary. We went over which points needed correction and why, and then moved on to speaking exercises. I provided her with a map and asked to give directions to different locations. We ended the session by asking each other questions ranging from how she likes Florida to what I know about Korean culture. The session went very well, and I left her with a writing topic for her to work on and bring to our next scheduled tutoring session.
I'm always looking for how people's first tutee session went. I think the first point of contact is pretty important for setting the tone. I think the exchange of culture is a good route to go, and I think the map idea was a cool interactive way to start your session and bring up conversational topics to help further diagnose and motivate her to keep participating.
