My first Class Observation was a reading class with Dr. Pollack. The class began with a rundown of upcoming assignments, then transitioned into a recap of a reading from last week. The teacher asked students to summarize the reading from last week. I remember there was relative silence at the beginning, as students were unsure on speaking up. The teacher took the initiative to improve students' level of comfort, and guided volunteers through summarizing. This served as the pre-reading. Dr. Pollack then handed out the main activity, an article on artificial intelligence; I was also given the text so I could see what students were engaging with. The piece had highlighted text to help students grasp its main topic. There was teacher-led conversation with the students on the reading, intercutting with class readings of a passage from the text. Students made observations that showed their understanding of the content of the text, and were able to voice their opinions on the dangers of AI. During group sessions, students were tasked with discussing the reading among themselves, a way of practicing their previous activity with one another, and with less teacher supervision.
