Today, June 17th, I met with the Saudi Arabian Suialman at The Paper Fox (a coffee establishment) at 11 am. We spent our hour together familiarizing ourselves with each other's culture which proved an exercise in conversation that proved useful in gleaning some of what Suialman wanted from these sessions and in assessing his English mastery. He wishes very much to become what he calls "a better listener" and wishes also to attain a greater ease in spoken sentence formulation and "conversation openers." We decided that a good word to focus on, in terms of his progression with English, is "fluidity". Before I left him to formulate a proper plan for his tutoring in the future, he informed me that he was reading Call of the Wild (a Jack London classic) and I asked if he would be willing to write a short, and organic (not overly thought out and examined) summary of the book and email it to me so that I could asses his written English. All in all we are excited to be working together and I look forward to future sessions.
I think the idea of having your tutee summarize his reading is an excellent one. Without a doubt, this a great example of fostering intrinsic motivation in your students. I will definitely try to take a leaf out of your book in my future tutoring sessions. Great job, man.
