Yesterday, June 17th, I met with one of my tutees, Sumi, at the Starbucks behind the CIES building. To break the ice, we discussed her time in America, how the nation and its politics are portrayed in her home country of South Korea, and some of the general worries she has about her English usage. From our conversation, I came to understand that Sumi is in possession of a wide range of vocabulary and has a solid handle on many of the basic grammar forms, but does not feel confident in her speaking abilities. I gave her many words of encouragement and we proceeded to discuss a wide range of topics related to her learning of English. We reviewed conditional statements, continuous tenses, and perfect tenses to address some areas of confusion that have been tripping her up. At our next meeting, I plan to review these grammar forms with her, approach more topics of confusion, and hopefully, help her on her journey to becoming a more confident speaker of the English language.
