Caleb Dros TS #5
Today I met Ngoc at the lounge in
the CIES basement. She brought a composition being prepared for draft #2. I
served as the editor where I allowed her to read sentences and highlighted the
issue areas. I then asked her key questions to draw the logical answer out. I
then explained to her why these sentences work grammatically over what she had
previously. This also served for conversation and pronunciation help when
needed. We went over definite articles, number agreements and what makes
something 'American' versus something 'being in America'. We also discussed 'on
Disneyland' and 'in Disneyland'.
Ngoc’s essay has a few grammar
mistakes, but I allow her to read them out while asking questions. It turns out
that she sometimes intuitively corrects herself. I told her that reading aloud
often enough will help even native speakers write more fluently, and this is
the basis of our practice sessions with composition grammar.
