Today I met Ngoc at the CIES lounge for a session of
tutoring. She didn’t have anything to practice so we went over some reading and
pronunciation practice. Using the vowel rules that we learnt last week, I was
able to explain and instruct her on how to recognize vowel sounds in words. I
also allowed her to slow her reading down because she tends to go too fast and
slur word sounds together. We did a first reading, identified the trouble words,
then I explained the vowel rules, how to break down things by the syllables and
put them back together. By the end of the exercise she read the passage much
smoothly and much more easily than the first time. I’m not sure what professors
recommend but I told her it’s better to go a slight bit slower with more
correct pronunciation than too fast and slurring sounds and skipping over
entire letters.
She seemed more encouraged by the end, so we will likely continue this path tomorrow. Once the article was smoothly read over and rules were reinforced, the session ended.
