Today I met
Ngoc at the CIES computer lab for a session. She didn’t bring anything today,
so I decided to give her some Level 3 reading from an ESL website. As we read,
she let me know that she has an issue using intonation like native speakers. I
showed Ngoc how to ‘read’ commas which add information in front of a sentence. I
used the example of how English speakers tend to go up and down like a wave
when they speak. I then used the example of how grade schoolteachers read to kindergarteners
to make a story more interesting. This really got through to Ngoc and we used a
toned-down version of this exaggeration to make the way she reads more fluid
and animated. I also showed Ngoc how to read the information in quotations with
a similar approach. I think the exaggeration exercise helps to make reading more
comfortable because we were ‘acting’ to feel the sentence instead of focusing
on intonation.
