Erfaan Mahmoodi TS #3
My third tutoring session with Yan was focused entirely on correcting an essay of hers. In her grammar class, she had been asked to write on her three favorite smartphone apps; the teacher then returned the essay with annotations on what to improve, which Yan responded to by writing appendices to after her essay’s end. I read the essay and stopped at moments where I noticed an issue of grammar or spelling: with each stop, I explained to Yan what was the issue, and varied between giving Yan the initiative to figure out the answer and presenting the correct answer myself. The latter happened more often as we drew to a close because of time restrictions, but throughout I prioritized the former so that I could make sure Yan was applying our previous lessons and so she could experiment. Some of the more memorable subjects we covered during our session included the use of “of” in titles, and whether or not to capitalize it, when to use plural and singular nouns when saying something such as “every (noun) that would like this…” With each lesson, Yan has become more and more comfortable with the tutoring and is demonstrating a greater ability at grammar, utilizing what we have covered before. As a cute bonus, she also gifted me two bananas for lunch.
