Today, July 1st, I met with my tutee, Sumi, at the Starbucks behind the Hecht House around 3 o'clock. For today's session, Sumi wanted me to assist her with the speaking portion of a presentation that she had been working on for class. She had me read over her script and point out grammar mistakes where I saw them. I attempted to approach these grammar mistakes inductively, wherein Sumi had the chance to rectify them herself before I did. Fortunately, Sumi was able to catch most of her mistakes when pointed in the right direction, and I had to explain very little. After we went over her script, I had Sumi read it aloud to me as if I were a member of the audience. Following this, we briefly went over intonations, such as the rising intonation that often accompanies questions, so as to sharpen Sumi's speaking skills for the presentation. Moving away from the presentation, we reviewed the gerund phrase lesson from last week, and Sumi was able to provide many grammatically-perfect examples of the grammar form. As a final bit of speaking practice, I had Sumi talk as much about a topic as she could for forty-five seconds, and afterwards, I would respond to and critique her speaking. That about sums everything we went over today. I am eager to hear how Sumi's presentation went next time I meet with her.
