Wednesday, July 3rd, I met with my tutee, Hyo Sang Yong, in the computer lab of the Hecht House from 5:00 to 6:30. With this meeting, we continued to work our way through the lengthy idiom sheet. My method for covering these idioms involves role play scenarios, where Hyo Sang attempts to provide appropriate examples. If he is unable to give an example or makes a mistake, I correct him after the fact. In this way, Hyo Sang is receiving a great amount of productive speaking experience while approaching the new material in an inductive manner. During these exercises, we branched out into mini-lessons regarding the present participle, gerunds, and a host of new vocabulary words. While not a part of the tutoring session, Hyo Sang and I attended an on-campus showing of the English film Shazam. Hyo Sang said he understand about 40% of the film, due to the film being packed to the gills with idiomatic comedy and cultural references. I am meeting Hyo Sang again on Wednesday, July 10th.
