Summer Camp
Last Wednesday, I had once again gone to my volunteer job. I was working with the much younger students this time instead of the third grade and above students. For that day lesson plan, we were working with the W questions. The who, when, why, where, etc. Because the students are always young and are not at a level high of English at the moment, we always use a deductive approach. We started by writing on the whiteboard the list of the W questions. Then we had sentences written on the board with the W questions in them in different colors. We spoke in a clear and slow enough manner for the students to understand, occasionally, if the students were still struggling to understand I would tell them in Spanish what the words mean. For example, I would say "qué" for "what" etc. and then give them an example sentence in both English and Spanish. I use a small amount of Spanish in the class because they needed to learn how to listen to English words and instruction. We had the students pair up into two and have one of them asking the question while the other does the response. The students are very shy, so we also try to get them to speak aloud in English a lot.
