Class Observation #1: Speaking:
Date/Time: 24 June / 1:00-1:50 PM
Dr. Rios handed out packets for the first day of the second week! He then started off the class by talking about his children and about his neighborhood generator blow up @ 3 am in the morning; a very funny and intriguing way to start a class; caught everyone’s attention!
He then began with a discussion at the beginning of class, asking “What is your favorite academic subject in school?” To students and requesting them to explain their answer. Students answered with detail. He made some clear and minor mistake corrections using a tactic taught in class; when the professor made corrections he would kind of ask for them to repeat the sentence and see if they noticed the mistake they made and if not, flat out correct them.
Seemed interested in hearing every story students told during the discussion; felt like a real conversation and I feel as though that encourages students.
He would make random grammar points as students spoke and responded and he would notice small but very important. Class and professor would laugh at some responses and it made the environment very comfortable.
After the discussion, the professor went on to talk about timed speaking practice and focused on the handouts. The professor then instructed students to write an outline for this activity; he told them not to focus on the facts of the details of what is being spoken about because he will just be focusing on your speaking practice and what you can do with the language.
Outline requested goes as follows:
- Name
- Restate the topic
- Give opinion
- Agree/Disagree
- Answer the question.
- Give 2 reason and 2 examples to support the reason with something.
- Conclusion
All of this needed to last only 45 seconds with 15 seconds of time.
He stated that he will highlight the error but not fix it for the student but rather have the student check what mistakes they made so they can correct it so they can turn it in and get extra points!
Professor spoke very fast and naturally! Overheard students mentioning that he goes quick.
