TS #5 Andres #4: 1 July

On Monday, July 1st at 3 PM, I met with Andres in the downstairs lounge and began the session by pop quizzing him on vocabulary words we covered the previous session, specifically focusing on the words that can be used in multiple ways or that have multiple definitions (as depth of vocabulary is his main struggle). After this miniature quiz and review, I asked Andres to show me the list of vocabulary words he did not understand from reading the podcast assigned to him the previous tutoring session; although I told him not to worry about completing the podcast and to do this only on his free time, he managed to completely read and listen to half of the podcast, which allowed him to have a lot of new vocabulary words to cover. The vocabulary was split into two columns; a section of words that are new/were never heard of before and words that were seen/heard before but not in the same context as seen in the sentence the word is present. We went down the list and I asked Andres to read the sentences in which the vocabulary words were present and use context clues to try and figure out the definition. We also covered a variety of common idioms among the vocabulary that was unfamiliar, such as “(in the) spur of the moment” and “(to) poke around”. After the tutoring session was over, I asked Andres to look over the second half of the This American Life podcast assigned last week freely and jot down any new vocabulary to go over for the next tutoring session.
